Birkel is Germany's most famous pasta brand, with a history dating back to 1874 when Balthasar Birkel founded a mill and pasta factory in Schramberg. The brand became a pioneer in the industry by introducing standardized quality and industrial production techniques that transformed pasta from a local specialty into a national staple. Over the decades, Birkel established itself as the market leader in Germany, known particularly for its egg pasta and quick-cooking varieties.
In terms of ownership, the brand has transitioned through several major corporate hands. For many years, it was part of the Danone group and later the Ebro Foods portfolio. Today, Birkel is owned by the Italian food group Newlat Food S.p.A., which acquired the brand along with the 3 Glocken brand in 2013. Despite its Italian ownership, the primary manufacturing remains concentrated in Germany, specifically at the historic production site in Mannheim managed by Newlat GmbH, ensuring the brand maintains its traditional German identity and quality standards.
