The brand was founded in 1912 by Alfred Ritter and Clara Ritter in Bad Cannstatt, Stuttgart. The specific square design was introduced in 1932, created to fit perfectly inside the pocket of a sport jacket without breaking, which gave birth to the name 'Ritter's Sport Chocolate'.

Today, the brand remains a family-owned enterprise, maintaining its commitment to sustainability and high-quality ingredients. While the primary production facility is located in Waldenbuch, Germany, the company also operates a production site in Breitenbrunn, Austria, and sources its cocoa from its own plantation, El Cacao, in Nicaragua. The brand is managed by Alfred T. Ritter GmbH & Co. KG and is one of the few remaining large independent confectionery companies in Europe.
