The brand was founded in 1958 by Laxmishanker Pathak and his family after they emigrated from East Africa to the United Kingdom, starting with a small shop in London. The brand successfully introduced authentic Indian flavors to the British palate, eventually becoming a staple in kitchens across Europe and North America.

While the brand maintains its traditional roots, it is now primarily manufactured in the United Kingdom, specifically at large facilities in Leigh, Greater Manchester. In 2007, the Pathak family sold the business to Associated British Foods (ABF), a global giant in the food industry. Today, Patak's continues to operate as a key brand within ABF's grocery division, holding a significant market share in the global Indian food category.
