Philips Sonicare is a premium line of electric toothbrushes that originated from the technology developed by David Giuliani and University of Washington professors. The brand was initially launched under the company Optiva Corporation in the United States in the late 1980s. Due to its innovative sonic technology, it quickly became a leader in oral healthcare.
In 2000, the Dutch multinational electronics giant Royal Philips acquired Optiva, integrating the technology into its Personal Health division. While the brand has Dutch ownership and American technological roots, manufacturing for the Sonicare series is decentralized. Most units and brush heads are currently produced in China and other Asian manufacturing hubs to meet global demand, though some specialized research and development remains in the Netherlands and the US.
Today, Philips continues to be the ultimate owner of the brand, maintaining its headquarters in Amsterdam. The Sonicare line remains one of the most recommended sonic toothbrush brands by dental professionals worldwide.
