Matrix.org

Matrix is an open-source project that publishes an open standard for real-time, interoperable, and decentralized communication. Originally created within the company Amdocs, the project was later spun off to focus on its mission of providing a secure and open alternative to proprietary chat applications. It is most commonly used for Instant Messaging, VoIP, and WebRTC signaling.

The initiative is now overseen by The Matrix.org Foundation, a non-profit organization registered in the United Kingdom. This ensures that the protocol remains a neutral public good. While the protocol itself is open and maintained by a global community of developers, the core team also founded a commercial entity known as Element (formerly New Vector Ltd), which provides hosting services and client applications like the Element messenger.

As a decentralized protocol, there is no single 'manufacturing' location; the software is developed by a global community of contributors. The ultimate governance lies with the Matrix.org Foundation to ensure the standard remains open and accessible to all without corporate lock-in.
