Rama Culinesse Butternote is a popular plant-based liquid fat used for roasting and cooking, designed to provide a butter-like flavor with the benefits of vegetable oils. Originally launched by the German margarine association and later developed under the Unilever umbrella, the Rama brand has deep roots in Germany where it has been a household staple for over 100 years.
In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads business to Upfield, an investment firm owned by KKR. Since then, Upfield has become the world’s leading producer of plant-based spreads and oils. The brand continues to focus on plant-based alternatives, emphasizing its commitment to palm-oil-free production and vegan-friendly ingredients. Manufacturing takes place predominantly in specialized facilities across Europe, including historical sites in Germany to serve the DACH region.
