It was originally developed by Sheldon Kaplan at Survival Technology Inc., a company that focused on military medical applications. Over decades, through various mergers and acquisitions, the rights to the brand moved from Survival Technology to Meridian Medical Technologies.

Today, the manufacturing of EpiPen remains centered in the United States, specifically through Meridian Medical Technologies, which is a subsidiary of Pfizer. However, the commercial marketing and distribution rights were famously acquired by Mylan in 2007. In 2020, Mylan merged with Upjohn (a former division of Pfizer) to form a new global healthcare company named Viatris. Consequently, while Pfizer’s subsidiary continues to manufacture the devices in the U.S., the brand is under the ultimate ownership and commercial management of Viatris, headquartered in the United States.
