Founded by Joe Coulombe in Pasadena, California, in 1967, the brand was initially conceived as a tropical-themed convenience store before evolving into the specialty grocery powerhouse it is today. The brand is celebrated for its 'no-frills' approach, removing middleman costs by sourcing directly from manufacturers.

While the brand is quintessentially American in identity, its ownership has been international for decades. In 1979, the company was acquired by the German businessman Theo Albrecht, one of the founders of the Aldi supermarket empire. Today, Trader Joe's is owned by ALDI Nord, which operates independently from ALDI Sud (the company behind Aldi stores in the United States).

Manufacturing of Trader Joe’s products occurs in multiple countries, as the company partners with countless third-party suppliers globally to produce its house-branded items. Many products are manufactured in the United States, but others—ranging from Italian pastas to Thai curries—are produced in their respective regions of origin to ensure authenticity and quality.
