Salewa is a premier outdoor sports brand with a storied history dating back to 1935 when Josef Liebhart founded the company in Munich, Germany. Initially specializing in leather and saddlery products, the brand evolved into a leader in mountaineering and alpine equipment, becoming renowned for its innovation in lightweight gear and technical apparel. Throughout the 20th century, Salewa expanded its footprint across the Alps and eventually the global stage.

In 1990, the brand was acquired by the Oberalp Group, an Italian family-owned company based in Bolzano, South Tyrol. This acquisition anchored the brand in the heart of the Dolomites, which now serves as the testing ground and inspiration for its R&D. While the heart of the brand is in Italy, manufacturing is primarily outsourced to specialized production facilities in Asia (Vietnam and China) and parts of Europe to ensure a blend of technical performance and scale. Today, Salewa continues to be a subsidiary of the Oberalp Group, maintaining its status as a top-tier mountain sports provider.
