Dollar Shave Club was founded in 2011 by Michael Dubin and Mark Levine as a direct-to-consumer subscription service aimed at making high-quality shaving products affordable. The brand gained massive fame through a viral marketing video and quickly disrupted the grooming industry by offering mail-order razors at a fraction of the price of retail competitors.
Historically, the brand sourced its blades from Dorco, a South Korean manufacturer, while various handles and grooming products are produced in different global locations including the United States. This globally distributed supply chain allows the company to maintain its competitive pricing model.
In 2016, the consumer goods giant Unilever acquired Dollar Shave Club for approximately $1 billion. However, in late 2023, Unilever sold a majority stake (35% retained) to Nexus Capital Management. Today, the brand operates under the primary ownership of Nexus Capital Management while continuing to expand its product line from razors into skin care, hair care, and body wash.
