The payment network, Mastercard, originated in the United States in 1966 as Interbank.

Today, the credit card is issued by various financial institutions depending on the region. In Germany, it is typically issued by Deutsche Kreditbank AG (DKB) under license from Mastercard International. While Mastercard is headquartered in the United States, the physical production of the credit cards occurs at numerous certified secure manufacturing facilities globally. The brand remains under the ultimate ownership of Mastercard Inc. and the Lufthansa Group for the loyalty program components.
