Liquore Strega, also known simply as Strega, is one of Italy's most famous herbal liqueurs. It was first created in 1860 by the Saffron-trading Strega family in Benevento, Italy. The liqueur is celebrated for its distinctive bright yellow color, which is derived from saffron, and its complex flavor profile consisting of approximately 70 different herbs and spices.
The production has remained in the city of Benevento for over 160 years, maintaining a strong connection to its legendary roots, which reference a local myth about Benevento being a gathering place for witches (Strega is the Italian word for witch). Today, the brand is still managed by the founding family, ensuring the preservation of the original secret recipe and traditional distillation methods.
Ownership has remained remarkably stable throughout its history, staying within the Strega Alberti family line. The company also produces a variety of other goods, including artisanal chocolates and nougat, further expanding the brand's presence in the luxury food and beverage market.
