EMLA is a world-renowned topical anesthetic cream used to numb the skin before medical or cosmetic procedures. The brand was originally developed in Sweden by Astra AB (now AstraZeneca), utilizing a unique eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine.
Starting around 2016-2017, AstraZeneca divested its global rights to EMLA (excluding certain markets like the USA and Japan) to Aspen Pharmacare. Aspen, a leading multinational specialty pharmaceutical company headquartered in South Africa, now acts as the ultimate owner and manufacturer. While the manufacturing is primarily centralized in Sweden at specialized facilities inherited from the original developers, the brand's commercial and strategic ownership is firmly under the Aspen Group umbrella.
