Birra Messina is an iconic Italian beer brand founded in 1923 in the city of Messina, Sicily. Originally known as Birra Trinacria, the brand eventually became a staple of Sicilian identity. In the late 1980s, the brand was acquired by Heineken Italia. This acquisition led to a significant shift in production, which was eventually moved from the original brewery in Messina to Heineken's facilities in Massafra, Apulia.
In recent years, the brand has seen a major revitalization with the launch of the 'Birra Messina Cristalli di Sale' variant. To maintain a connection to its roots, a portion of the production is now brewed in Sicily through a partnership with the Birrificio Messina cooperative, formed by former local workers. However, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership and global management of the Dutch multinational Heineken N.V.
