HMD mobile phones and tablets

HMD, often referred to as HMD Global, is a mobile communications company based in Finland. It was founded in 2016 through the acquisition of the mobile phone business of Microsoft Mobile Pro and Nokia. The brand is deeply rooted in Finnish tech history, as it was established by former Nokia executives to revive the Nokia brand in the smartphone and feature phone markets under an exclusive license.

While the company is headquartered in Espoo, Finland, the actual manufacturing of HMD-branded and Nokia-branded devices occurs through a globally distributed supply chain. A significant portion of production is handled by FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Foxconn, with major manufacturing facilities located in China, India, and Vietnam. In recent years, HMD has also shifted some of its manufacturing operations back to Europe to cater to specific security and local enterprise requirements.

Under the leadership of its parent company, HMD Global Oy, the brand has expanded its portfolio to include its own HMD-branded hardware alongside its licensed Nokia products. The company remains an independent private entity with strategic partnerships involving major tech firms like Google and Qualcomm, focusing on a clean software experience and sustainable hardware design.
