Rowntree's is one of the most storied names in the British confectionery industry, with a history dating back to 1862 when Henry Isaac Rowntree acquired a cocoa business in York, England. The brand is celebrated for inventing iconic sweets such as Fruit Pastilles (1881) and Fruit Gums (1893). These products were developed to provide a long-lasting, fruity chew and have remained staples of the UK candy market for over a century.

While the brand originated as a family-run Quaker business in York, it underwent significant corporate changes in the late 20th century. Rowntree Mackintosh was formed through a merger in 1969, and in 1988, the company was acquired by the Swiss multinational Nestlé. Today, a significant portion of Rowntree's production still takes place in the United Kingdom, particularly at Nestlé's major manufacturing facility in Fawdon, near Newcastle upon Tyne.

Under Nestlé's ownership, the Rowntree's brand has expanded its portfolio to include modern variations like 'Randoms' and has transitioned many of its recipes to be vegan-friendly by removing gelatin. As of 2026, Rowntree's remains a core pillar of Nestlé's global confectionery segment, managed from its headquarters in Switzerland while maintaining its distinct British heritage.
