Nokia is one of the most iconic names in the history of mobile telecommunications. Originally a Finnish conglomerate founded in 1865, the brand transitioned from paper and rubber production to becoming a global leader in mobile technology during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Today, the Nokia brand name is utilized in the smartphone market through a strategic licensing agreement. HMD Global, a Finnish company, holds the exclusive license to design and market mobile phones under the Nokia brand. While the brand remains Finnish in heritage and design, the manufacturing of Nokia-branded devices is largely outsourced to external partners, most notably FIH Mobile (a subsidiary of Foxconn), with major production facilities located in Vietnam, China, and India.
Ownership of the Nokia brand itself remains with Nokia Corporation based in Espoo, Finland, which now focuses primarily on network infrastructure and 5G technology. The consumer device segment operates independently via HMD Global, ensuring the legacy of the brand continues in the competitive modern smartphone landscape.
