Originally founded in 1825 in the town of Laško, Slovenia, by Franz Geyer, it has become the country's most famous brewery and a symbol of national heritage.

While the brand maintains its deep Slovenian roots and continues to be brewed primarily in its original location in Laško, the ownership of the brand has transitioned over the years. In 2015, the brewery was acquired by the Dutch multinational Heineken N.V., which now serves as the ultimate owner, managing the brand through its Slovenian subsidiary, Pivovarna Laško Union.
