Proactiv was originally developed in 1995 by dermatologists Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields in the United States and marketed through the infomercial company Guthy-Renker. For decades, it became a household name in acne treatment through celebrity endorsements and direct-to-consumer sales.
In 2016, a joint venture called The Proactiv Company (Alchemee) was formed between Guthy-Renker and Galderma (a Nestlé Skin Health company at the time). Later, Galderma took full control of the brand. In 2022, Taro Pharmaceutical Industries, a subsidiary of the Indian multinational Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, acquired Alchemee and the Proactiv brand for approximately $90 million. Today, Proactiv is part of Sun Pharma's global dermatology portfolio. Manufacturing occurs across a global network of facilities, with significant production historically located in the United States, though the parent company utilizes its vast international manufacturing footprint in India, North America, and beyond.
