Xtandi enzalutamide

Xtandi (generic name: enzalutamide) is a prominent nonsteroidal antiandrogen (NSAA) medication used primarily in the treatment of various forms of prostate cancer. The drug's journey began with its discovery at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) by scientists Charles Sawyers and Michael Jung. It was later developed and brought to market by the biotechnology firm Medivation in collaboration with Astellas Pharma.

Ownership of the brand is currently split under a global co-development and commercialization agreement. In 2016, the American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer acquired Medivation, thereby becoming the ultimate owner of the original development rights. Today, Pfizer and the Japanese company Astellas Pharma jointly commercialize Xtandi in the United States, while Astellas maintains the responsibility for manufacturing and commercialization in international markets.

Manufacturing of Xtandi occurs across several global locations to meet international demand. For instance, batch release and production for European markets have been historically linked to facilities such as Delpharm Meppel in the Netherlands, while Astellas oversees the broader global supply chain from its operations in Japan and various regional subsidiaries.
