yello® is a premium branded apple variety known scientifically as Shinano Gold. The variety was originally created in 1983 at the Nagano Research Centre in Japan through a cross between Golden Delicious and Senshu apples. It is distinguished by its vibrant alabaster-yellow skin and a unique sweet, tropical aroma.

The commercial rights and the yello® brand are co-owned by the Nagano Prefecture in Japan along with two major Italian fruit growers' associations: VOG (Association of South Tyrolean Fruit Growers' Cooperatives) and VIP (Association of Val Venosta Fruit Growers' Cooperatives). While the variety was born in Japan, its primary commercial production and global marketing headquarters are located in the South Tyrol region of Italy.

Today, yello® apples are produced in multiple countries under strict licensing agreements. They are primarily grown in the South Tyrol region of Northern Italy, but they are also cultivated in Australia (by Montague Farms), South Africa, and the United States to ensure year-round availability in different global markets.
