Crunchyroll is the world’s most popular streaming platform dedicated to anime, manga, and dorama. Originally founded in 2006 by a group of University of California, Berkeley graduates, the brand started as a user-uploaded video site. It quickly transitioned into a legal distribution platform, securing licensing deals with major Japanese production houses to provide content to fans worldwide.
Throughout its history, Crunchyroll has undergone significant ownership changes. It was initially acquired by The Chernin Group, which later formed a joint venture with AT&T known as Otter Media. In 2021, a landmark deal was finalized where Sony, through its Funimation Global Group (a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex), acquired Crunchyroll for approximately $1.175 billion. This move consolidated Sony's position as the dominant player in the international anime market.
While headquartered in San Francisco, California, Crunchyroll operates as a global digital service with offices in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and several European cities. As of 2024 and beyond, it remains the primary anime brand under the Sony Group Corporation umbrella, having fully integrated the library and subscriber base of the former Funimation service to streamline the fan experience under a single, unified platform.
