Schweppes Indian Tonic is a globally recognized carbonated mixer with a history dating back to 1783. The brand was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, by Johann Jacob Schweppe, a German-born watchmaker and amateur scientist who pioneered the first industrial process for bottling carbonated water. Over the centuries, the brand became synonymous with premium mixers, particularly its iconic Indian Tonic Water, which was first popularized for its quinine content.
Today, Schweppes operates under a fragmented global ownership structure following various corporate demergers, most notably the 2008 split of Cadbury Schweppes. In Norway and much of Northern and Western Europe, the brand is owned by the Japanese conglomerate Suntory Group through its subsidiary Schweppes International Limited. However, the product is bottled and distributed locally in the Norwegian market by Ringnes AS, which is part of the Carlsberg Group, or managed through coordination with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners depending on specific regional licensing agreements.
Globally, the trademark is split: Keurig Dr Pepper owns the rights in North America; Asahi Group owns it in Australia; and The Coca-Cola Company (or its bottling partners like Coca-Cola HBC) manages it in the UK and over 150 other countries. Despite this complex web of owners, the product remains central to cocktail culture worldwide.
