Heinz is one of the most recognizable food brands in the world, primarily famous for its tomato ketchup and '57 Varieties' slogan. The brand was founded in 1869 by Henry J. Heinz in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, starting with a recipe for bottled horseradish. Over the next century, it expanded into a global powerhouse, introducing its iconic ketchup in 1876 and later expanding into baked beans, soups, and infant nutrition.
Manufacturing for Heinz products is highly decentralized to serve local markets efficiently. For example, the world's largest baked bean factory is located in Wigan, England, while significant ketchup production occurs in Fremont, Ohio, and various facilities in Canada and the Netherlands. This global footprint allows the brand to maintain high supply volumes across more than 200 countries.
In terms of ownership, the brand underwent a massive shift in 2013 when it was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital. This was followed by a mega-merger in 2015 with the Kraft Foods Group, forming The Kraft Heinz Company. Today, it remains a central pillar of this multinational conglomerate, which is co-headquartered in Chicago and Pittsburgh.
