Carhartt is an iconic American brand that has defined the workwear industry for over a century. Founded in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt in Detroit, Michigan, the company originally set out to create durable overalls for railroad workers. Over the decades, its reputation for ruggedness and high quality made it a staple for blue-collar professionals and, eventually, a significant figure in global streetwear culture.
Today, Carhartt remains a privately held, family-owned business, with leadership passed down through generations. While the brand is deeply rooted in the United States, its manufacturing operations are global. Carhartt operates its own facilities in the U.S. (notably in Kentucky and Tennessee) and formerly in Mexico, while also utilizing a vast network of certified suppliers across Asia and Europe.
In addition to its core workwear line, the brand is represented internationally by Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP). Launched in 1994 by Edwin Faeh, Carhartt WIP is the fashion-forward lifestyle division that adapts classic Carhartt designs for an urban audience. Carhartt WIP operates its own manufacturing hubs, notably in Tunisia, ensuring the brand maintains a consistent presence in both the functional workwear and premium fashion markets.
