Sultana Fruitbiscuit Appel is a classic snack consisting of a wheat-based biscuit filled with currants, raisins, and apple puree. The brand was originally created in 1932 by the Dutch company Koninklijke Verkade, based in Zaandam, responding to a demand for portable, fruit-filled snacks. The name 'Sultana' is derived from the specific type of seedless grapes used in the filling.

Today, the manufacturing remains rooted in the Netherlands, specifically at the Verkade factory in Zaandam, where hundreds of millions of these biscuits are produced annually for the Dutch and international markets. Over the decades, the brand has transitioned through several owners as the global snack industry consolidated.

In 2014, the Turkish conglomerate Yıldız Holding acquired United Biscuits (which then owned Verkade). This led to the formation of pladis Global, a dedicated snack subsidiary. Consequently, Sultana is now part of the pladis portfolio, making it a brand with deep Dutch heritage currently under Turkish ultimate ownership.
