MinIO is a high-performance, software-defined object storage system designed for the era of artificial intelligence and hybrid cloud environments. Originally founded in 2014 by Anand Babu "AB" Periasamy, Garima Kapoor, and Harshavardhana, the project was created to provide an open-source alternative to Amazon S3, capable of handling massive amounts of unstructured data like photos, videos, and log files.
As a software product, MinIO does not have a single physical manufacturing location; instead, it is developed primarily in the United States and deployed globally across private, public, and edge cloud infrastructures. The company transitioned its licensing to GNU AGPL v3.0 in 2021 to ensure its community-driven roots remained protected while offering commercial licenses for enterprise needs. Today, MinIO is a recognized leader in the storage industry, widely used by over half of the Fortune 500 companies for its speed, scalability, and Kubernetes-native architecture.
