Rio Mare is an iconic Italian brand that revolutionized the canned fish market in 1965 by introducing single-serving pink cans of high-quality tuna in olive oil. The brand's origin is deeply rooted in Milan, Italy, where it was first registered by Joseph Nissim, founder of the Bolton Group.
Today, Rio Mare is the leading canned tuna brand in Italy and Europe. Its production process involves a global supply chain to ensure freshness and sustainability. While much of the final processing and packaging occurs at its state-of-the-art facility in Cermenate, Italy (the largest of its kind in Europe), the sourcing and preliminary processing often take place near primary fishing grounds. The 'Seychelles (FC01)' mark visible on the packaging refers to the Indian Ocean Tuna (IOT) facility in Victoria, Seychelles, which is one of the world's largest tuna canneries and a key manufacturing partner for the brand. Additional production facilities are located in Spain and Ecuador to support its global distribution.
The brand remains a core asset of the Bolton Group, a family-owned multinational that continues to focus on international expansion and sustainable fishing practices, including partnerships with the WWF and the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF).
