TDK Corporation, originally known as Tokyo Denki Kagaku Kogyo K.K., was founded in 1935 in Tokyo, Japan. The company's initial purpose was to commercialize ferrite, a magnetic material invented at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Over the decades, TDK became a household name globally for its magnetic recording media, particularly cassette tapes and later optical discs like CDs and DVDs. However, in the late 2000s, TDK strategically shifted its focus away from consumer recording media to industrial and electronic solutions.

Today, TDK is a world leader in electronic solutions, focusing on passive components, sensors, and energy application products. Its manufacturing footprint is truly global, with over 250 sites across Japan, China, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. While many advanced components are still produced in Japan, large-scale manufacturing facilities are located in China, Malaysia, and Hungary to serve the automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics markets.

Ownership of the brand remains with the original parent company, TDK Corporation, which is a publicly-traded multinational headquartered in Tokyo. It operates through several major groups and acquired subsidiaries, including EPCOS (Germany), InvenSense (USA), and Micronas (Germany), further diversifying its technological capabilities in sensors and power supplies.
