Commodore was a pioneer in the personal computing industry, most famous for the Commodore 64, which remains one of the best-selling single computer models of all time. Originally founded in the 1950s as a typewriter repair company, it evolved into a global powerhouse in the 8-bit and 16-bit computing eras.

Manufacturing historically took place in various locations, including the United States, West Germany, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, to meet global demand. Following the original company's bankruptcy in 1994, the brand name and intellectual property passed through several owners, including Escom and Tulip Computers.

As of recent years, the Commodore brand is managed by C64 Limited and Commodore Business Machines, which focus on retro-computing products and modern hardware inspired by the classic aesthetic. Ownership and licensing rights are often split between different entities for the trademark and the specific technology patents.
