Founded in 2009 by Jason Healy out of North Carolina, United States, it was one of the early pioneers of the e-cigarette industry. The brand underwent several high-profile acquisitions, being sold first to Lorillard Tobacco Company in 2012, which marked a significant entry of Big Tobacco into the vaping market.

Following a merger between Reynolds American and Lorillard in 2015, the blu brand was sold to Imperial Brands (formerly Imperial Tobacco) to address antitrust concerns. Today, blu is operated by Fontem Ventures, a subsidiary of Imperial Brands headquartered in the United Kingdom. Manufacturing for these devices typically takes place in specialized facilities in China, which is the global hub for vaping hardware production, though distribution and marketing are managed internationally.
