Neutrogena is a world-renowned skincare brand with a unique history that began in the United States. Founded in 1930 by Emanuel Stolaroff, the company was originally known as Natone. It gained its modern identity after Stolaroff discovered a mild, non-alkaline soap formula in Europe developed by a Belgian chemist. This soap, which cleared the skin without leaving residue, was branded as 'Neutrogena', leading the company to eventually rename itself after its most successful product.
The 'Norwegian Formula' featured on this lip care product is one of the brand's most famous lines. It was inspired by the traditional balms used by Norwegian fishermen to protect their skin from the harsh, frigid conditions of the Arctic Circle. Although the brand is American, the development of this specific formula payed homage to these Scandinavian survival techniques.
For many decades, Neutrogena was a subsidiary of the American multinational Johnson & Johnson. However, in 2023, Johnson & Johnson completed its separation of its consumer health division into a new, independent publicly traded company called Kenvue. Today, Kenvue is the ultimate owner of Neutrogena, headquartered in the United States. While the brand has global reach, many of its Norwegian Formula products, including this lip balm, are manufactured in France to supply the European and international markets.
