Toblerone is a globally recognized chocolate brand famous for its unique triangular peaks, which were inspired by the Swiss Alps, specifically the Matterhorn. The brand was created in Bern, Switzerland, in 1908 by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann. The name is a portmanteau of 'Tobler' and 'Torrone,' the Italian word for honey and almond nougat.
While historically manufactured exclusively in Bern, Switzerland, the production landscape changed recently. To comply with strict 'Swissness' laws and accommodate global growth, the brand's owner, Mondelez International, shifted some production to Bratislava, Slovakia, in 2023. As a result, newer packaging has removed the Matterhorn logo and replaced 'of Switzerland' with 'established in Switzerland' to reflect this dual-country manufacturing model.
Today, the brand is owned by the American multinational food giant Mondelez International. Despite the change in production location and ownership, the recipe remains consistent with its original blend of chocolate, honey, and almond nougat.
