Indio is a well-known Mexican dark lager, originally created in 1893 by the Cervecería Cuauhtémoc (now part of Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery) in Monterrey, Mexico. Initially named 'Cuauhtémoc' after the last Aztec emperor, common usage led to it being renamed 'Indio' (Spanish for 'Indian') because of the image on its label.
The beer is primarily manufactured in Mexico across various breweries owned by the parent company. In 2010, the Heineken Group acquired the Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery from FEMSA, meaning that the brand is now under the ultimate ownership of Heineken N.V., headquartered in the Netherlands. Despite this international ownership, it remains a quintessential symbol of Mexican brewing heritage and is widely exported globally.
