It was originally developed by John Lawson Johnston in response to a request from Napoleon III for a concentrated beef extract to feed the French army. Since its inception in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, it has become a staple of British food culture, famously consumed as a hot drink ('beef tea') at football matches and used as a savory spread on toast.

Over the decades, the brand has transitioned through several major corporate owners. Originally produced by Bovril Ltd, it was later acquired by companies including Cavenham and eventually Beecham Group/SmithKline Beecham. In 2000, it was purchased by the multinational giant Unilever. While there was a brief period where the formula was changed to a vegetarian yeast-based recipe during the BSE crisis, the classic beef extract version remains the brand's primary identity today.

The product continues to be manufactured primarily in the United Kingdom, specifically at the Unilever production facility in Burton-upon-Trent. As a flagship product in Unilever's savory portfolio, Bovril maintains a strong presence in the UK and Commonwealth markets, representing a unique intersection of traditional British culinary history and modern global FMCG management.
