The brand traces its roots back to the early 20th century in Wetzlar, Germany, where Ernst Leitz and Oskar Barnack revolutionized the photography world by creating the first functional 35mm camera, known as the Ur-Leica.

Today, Leica continues to manufacture its flagship M-series cameras and high-performance lenses primarily in Wetzlar, Germany, maintaining a reputation for meticulous hand-assembly and exceptional build quality. The company also operates a major manufacturing facility in Vila Nova de Famalic�o, Portugal, which handles various camera components and optical assemblies.

Leica Camera AG is currently owned by the Austrian investment company ACM Projektentwicklung GmbH, which holds a majority stake, while the American investment firm Blackstone Group holds a significant minority share. Despite its diversified international ownership, Leica remains deeply rooted in German engineering traditions and maintains its global headquarters in Wetzlar.
