Hoover is a household name in floor care, originating in the United States in the early 20th century. The company’s journey began in 1908 when William Henry Hoover purchased the patent for an electric suction sweeper from his wife’s cousin, James Spangler. Under the Hoover family's leadership, the brand became so dominant in the market that the word 'hoover' became a common verb for vacuuming in various countries, particularly in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Over the decades, Hoover expanded its reach globally, but its corporate structure underwent significant changes. In 1989, Maytag Corporation acquired Hoover, and later, the brand was split into regional entities. The North American operations were eventually sold to Techtronic Industries (TTI), a giant in the power tool and floor care industry based in Hong Kong. Today, Hoover products for the North American market are engineered and marketed under TTI's Floor Care division, while the international European brand is owned by an entirely different entity.
Manufacturing for Hoover products is now largely concentrated in Asia, specifically China and Vietnam, to leverage large-scale production efficiencies. However, the brand maintains a high-quality global standard, with its North American headquarters located in Charlotte, North Carolina, continuing the legacy of an American engineering icon under modern global ownership.
