Originally established by the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society (Apotekarsocieteten), the brand was created to standardize and provide high-quality pharmaceutical preparations through Swedish pharmacies. The name itself, 'Apotekens Composita,' translates roughly to 'the pharmacy's mixture,' reflecting its clinical and pharmaceutical heritage.

Over the decades, ACO transitioned from a pharmacy-exclusive brand to a dominant player in the Nordic beauty and skincare market. Known for its scientific approach and formulations tailored for sensitive skin and the harsh Nordic climate, it has become a household name across Scandinavia. The brand's research and development lab remains centered in Sweden to maintain its core expertise in Nordic skin health.

In terms of ownership, ACO was acquired by the Belgian group Omega Pharma, which in turn was acquired by the global self-care leader Perrigo Company plc in 2015. Today, ACO operates under the Perrigo umbrella, benefiting from a global distribution network while keeping its local operations and headquarters in Kista, Sweden.
