Brand History and Evolution

IAMS was founded in 1946 by Paul Iams in Dayton, Ohio. The brand was established on the revolutionary (at the time) belief that cats and dogs should be fed primarily as carnivores, focusing on high-quality animal protein. This philosophy led to the creation of the first high-protein, animal-based dry food for pets.

Ownership Journey

The brand saw significant expansion after it was acquired by Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1999. However, in 2014, P&G reached an agreement to sell the majority of its pet care brands. As a result, Mars, Incorporated acquired the IAMS business in North America, Latin America, and other select countries. In the European market, the brand was acquired by Spectrum Brands.

Manufacturing and Distribution

IAMS products are manufactured in multiple locations worldwide to serve different geographic markets. While much of the North American supply is produced in United States facilities (such as those in Ohio, Nebraska, and North Carolina), the products sold in Europe are typically produced in regional facilities under Spectrum Brands' management. This dual-ownership structure ensures that the brand remains a global leader in pet nutrition through diverse supply chains.
