Ribena is a world-renowned blackcurrant-based soft drink and cordial that originated in the United Kingdom. It was first developed in 1938 by Dr. Vernon Charley at the University of Bristol. During World War II, it gained significant popularity as a vital source of Vitamin C for children when citrus fruits were scarce.
The brand has undergone several changes in ownership throughout its history. Originally a product of H.W. Carter & Co, it was later acquired by Beecham Group (which became GlaxoSmithKline). In 2013, the brand was sold to the Japanese conglomerate Suntory. Today, Ribena is managed under Suntory Beverage & Food, with primary production still centered in the United Kingdom to maintain its heritage and quality standards.
