Marabou is one of Sweden's most iconic and beloved chocolate brands, famous for its signature smooth milk chocolate. The brand was founded in 1916 by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, who had previously found success with the Freia brand in Norway. Because the name Freia was already taken in Sweden, he named the new venture Marabou, after the marabou stork which was the brand symbol of Freia.

While the brand holds deep Swedish roots and maintains a large production facility in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, its ownership has transitioned to global corporate entities over the decades. Today, Marabou is owned by Mondelēz International, a world leader in the snack and confectionery industry. Despite its international ownership, Marabou remains a cultural staple in Scandinavia, continuing to use its traditional recipes and branding that have been recognized by Swedish Royal Warrant since the early 20th century.
