Since its establishment in 1876 in Sapporo, Hokkaido, by the Japanese government, Sapporo Breweries has become the oldest brand of beer in Japan. The 'Black Label' is its flagship product, known for a crisp and balanced flavor profile that caters to a wide range of beer drinkers.

Today, the brand is owned by Sapporo Holdings Ltd., a major Japanese conglomerate. While the primary production for domestic consumption takes place in Japan—across facilities in Hokkaido, Shizuoka, and Chiba—the brand has a significant global presence. For international markets, it is brewed in various locations through subsidiaries such as Sleeman Breweries in Canada and Anchor Brewing (prior to restructuring) in the USA, as well as via contract brewing in regions like Europe and Southeast Asia to maintain freshness and reduce logistics costs.
