NatWest, officially known as National Westminster Bank, is a cornerstone of the British financial landscape. The brand as it is known today was officially established in 1968 through the high-profile merger of the National Provincial Bank (founded in 1833) and the Westminster Bank (founded in 1834). This merger consolidated a vast network of community banks across England and Wales, creating one of the 'Big Four' clearing banks in the UK.
In 2000, NatWest was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group in one of the largest takeovers in British history. Following the global financial crisis of 2008, the group received a massive state bailout, leading the UK Government to hold an 84% stake at its peak. In a strategic shift in 2020, the parent company rebranded from RBS Group to NatWest Group to emphasize its primary retail brand and reset its reputation.
By May 2025, the UK Government successfully completed its multi-year divestment plan, selling its final shares and returning NatWest to full private ownership for the first time in 17 years. Today, the bank is a publicly traded entity owned by a diverse base of institutional and retail investors, remaining headquartered in London and Edinburgh, and serving over 20 million customers primarily within the United Kingdom.
