Grindr is a leading location-based social networking and dating application primarily serving the LGBTQ+ community. Launched in 2009 by Joel Simkhai under the company Nearby Buddy Finder, LLC, it became one of the first geosocial apps for smartphones, revolutionizing how users connect based on physical proximity.
The app was developed in the United States, and its primary technical infrastructure and operations remain based there. Over its history, the company has undergone significant ownership changes. It was notably acquired by the Chinese gaming firm Beijing Kunlun Tech in stages between 2016 and 2018. However, following concerns raised by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) regarding data privacy and national security, Kunlun was forced to divest the platform.
In 2020, Grindr was sold to San Vicente Acquisition LLC, a consortium of investors. The company eventually went public on the New York Stock Exchange in late 2022 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Tiga Acquisition Corp. Today, Grindr Inc. operates as an independent public company headquartered in West Hollywood, California, maintaining its position as a dominant global platform in its niche.
