Camel is one of the world's most recognizable cigarette brands, originally introduced by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1913 in the United States. It pioneered the use of a Turkish-Virginia tobacco blend, featured on its iconic packaging with a dromedary camel. The brand gained global prominence throughout the 20th century as a staple of American tobacco culture.
Today, the brand's ownership is split geographically. In the United States, R.J. Reynolds (now a subsidiary of British American Tobacco) continues to manufacture and market Camel. For all international markets outside the United States, the brand was acquired by Japan Tobacco International (JTI) in 1999.
Manufacturing for the international market, such as the pack shown which features European health warnings (Dutch, French, and German, typically seen in Belgium or Luxembourg), is conducted in various JTI facilities across Europe, including sites in Germany, Poland, and Romania. The brand is currently managed globally (ex-US) from JTI's headquarters in Switzerland under the ultimate parent company Japan Tobacco Inc., based in Tokyo.
