The brand originated in Belgium in 1980, founded by Philippe Vandemoortele under the Alpro NV name. Today, manufacturing occurs across several European facilities, primarily in Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom, to serve various regional markets.

Ownership of the brand has shifted through major corporate acquisitions. Originally part of the Vandemoortele Group, it was sold to Dean Foods (WhiteWave Foods) in 2009. In 2017, the French multinational Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods, bringing Alpro into its global portfolio.
