Bertolli is one of the world's most recognized olive oil brands, with a history dating back to 1865 when Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina opened a small shop in Lucca, Tuscany. The brand became a pioneer in the export of olive oil, reaching international markets early in its history. While its roots are firmly planted in Italy, the global demand for Bertolli products means that the olives and the subsequent production can occur in several regions across the Mediterranean, including Spain, Greece, and Tunisia, to maintain consistent quality and volume.

Over the decades, the ownership of the Bertolli brand has transitioned through several major multinational corporations. Originally a family-owned Italian business, it was acquired by Unilever in 2008. In 2014, Unilever sold its global olive oil division, including Bertolli, to the Spanish food giant Deoleo. Today, while Deoleo manages the olive oil business, other product lines bearing the Bertolli name (like pasta sauces and frozen meals) may be owned by different entities such as Mizkan or Conagra, but the core olive oil business is headquartered in Spain.
