The brand became an icon of the 1980s and 90s, celebrated for its casual style and commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Its manufacturing has historically taken place in multiple countries across Asia and Europe to serve its diverse global markets.

In late 2024, the brand underwent a significant structural change following financial difficulties and insolvency proceedings in Europe. While the parent company, Esprit Holdings Limited, remains headquartered in Hong Kong, the trademark rights for the footwear division were acquired by the German shoe retail giant Deichmann SE. This acquisition means that while the brand retains its California heritage and Hong Kong financial roots, the footwear business is now steered by one of Europe's largest shoe retailers based in Germany.
