Köhler sewing machine

This is a vintage sewing machine produced by Köhler, a historic brand based in Altenburg, Germany. The company was co-founded in 1871 by Hermann Köhler, Leopold Oskar Dietrich, and Gustav Winselmann. After his partners left to start their own ventures, Hermann Köhler expanded the factory into one of Germany's most prominent sewing machine manufacturers. The design seen in the image, with its intricate gold decals on a black cast-iron body, is characteristic of the late 19th to early 20th-century models produced in Altenburg.

Following World War II, the company was nationalized in East Germany (DDR). In 1948, it was merged with other local manufacturers to form the state-owned enterprise VEB Nähmaschinenwerke Altenburg, which became part of the larger Textima combine. Production of machines under the Köhler brand eventually transitioned into the 'Altenburg' and later 'Veritas' brands. As the original Hermann Köhler AG ceased to exist in its private form after 1947 and the GDR-era combines were dissolved or restructured after German reunification, the brand is now considered historical rather than an active commercial entity under a single global corporation.
