Blu (stylized as blu) was founded in 2009 by entrepreneurs in Charlotte, North Carolina. It quickly became a pioneer in the early electronic cigarette industry, focusing on providing an alternative for smokers. The brand gained significant traction in the United States and the United Kingdom, becoming one of the most visible names in the vaping market through aggressive marketing and distribution in convenience stores.
Blu e-liquids are manufactured in multiple locations to serve global markets. While the brand originated in the United States, its production and supply chain are international. The ingredients typically include propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavorings, and nicotine, often sourced and bottled in facilities that meet regional safety standards such as TPD in Europe and FDA regulations in the USA.
The ownership of blu has changed several times through major corporate acquisitions. Originally an independent company, it was acquired by Lorillard Tobacco Company in 2012. In 2015, as part of the Reynolds American and Lorillard merger, the brand was sold to Imperial Brands (formerly Imperial Tobacco). Today, Imperial Brands manages blu through its Fontem Ventures subsidiary, which focuses on Next Generation Products (NGP). The brand continues to be a core part of the global tobacco giant's portfolio as they transition toward smoke-free alternatives.
